Amyl, Poppers, Rush, Aromas – Pleasure and Danger

For those totally indulgent moments of euphoric sexual pleasure then amyl/poppers can give you the added intensity needed to embrace such a mind-altering state. But with the pleasures there can also be dangers.

It’s a daily fact of life that amyl (or poppers) are widely used throughout the world by bisexual and gay men in their sexual (and dance floor) activities. So as an active sexual male playing with men expect to encounter it.

Just published in Sydney (Australia) are the results of the annual survey into drug use. This survey is taken during the Sydney Gay Mardi Gras and then compared to other community surveys. In the area of Amyl/Inhalants it found that some 42% of gay male respondents used the substances, compared with 9% for lesbians and 0.5% or under for the general population.

What is it?
Amyl Nitrite or Alkyl Nitrite is a prescription drug particularly used in the treatment of angina. When inhaled it causes a rush of blood to the heart and brain resulting in a euphoric state of awareness that can last for around two to five minutes before being needed to be repeated. This head rush can also feel like a heat flush. It can also be a great relaxant for a tight sphincter and/or the gag reflex muscle in the throat. When inhaling, one nostril is pressed shut whilst the other inhales, and then the action is reversed.

Among my sex buddies there are those who will only use it near the moment of climax as it promptly brings on ejaculation and enhances their orgasm.

There are others who enjoy several sniffs during fucking, especially by the guy who is the bottom. It can help take the edge off any painful insertion for him but really at that heightened moment, the only thing that matters is to be actively involved in the immediate pleasures of deep, consistent and pleasurable fucking irrespective of whether you are active or receiving.

And then there is the player who begins to sniff before the sex begins and continues until its conclusion. Invariably his cock is of little use to his partner once the popper effect sets in. There’s little chance of maintaining an erection, so being a bottom, it allows him to take a pounding for very long periods.

Still others use it for heightening their masturbation activities, especially is they are wanking online to a live audience.

Some things to remember about poppers/amyl:

-       Headaches are common with many brands, both during use and then up to an hour after the immediate euphoric effect subsides. Experiment with different brands used by your partners to see which one suits you best

-       Don’t use it if you are taking erectile enhancement tablets like Viagra or Cialis, or if under blood pressure medication. As these act in the same way as amyl the combined effect can cause fainting, heart attacks or stroke. If you are being treated for anaemia, asthma, or heart conditions consult your doctor before use

-       Don’t combine with alcohol as this can in some cases lead to a loss of consciousness

-       Availability is generally through under-the-counter sales at adult sex shops. It comes in small bottles labelled as “head cleaner”, “upholstery cleaner”, “room ordorant”, or similar names as they cannot be sold as a drug under the actual name and purpose. In countries with more liberal laws you’ll find them displayed on the shelf. There are also many online suppliers through mailorder

-       Can burn the skin. Tip: Before inhaling put a small smear of lubricant or saliva around the nostril area and this wetness will decrease any burning of the skin should the liquid touch it. If the liquid touches the skin a burnt skin area may be obvious for the next 24 hours or more

-       Can cause loss of erection in some men

-       Never to be taken orally – can cause death

-       Product is banned in some countries and strictly controlled in others. It is generally listed as a drug, non addictive though it may be

-       Once opened it loses its original potent efficacy over a month or two

-       Store in a cool, dark place

-       It is very flammable so keep away from heat and flame

-       The name “poppers” came about in the 1980s when the substance was packaged in little glass ampules. When they were crushed they gave a popping sound.

Poppers can also introduce a new aspect of enjoyment to your love making at home with your wife or female partner. I’m told that it has helped many a reluctant wife to finally allow her to try – and enjoy – anal sex.

With such wide use of amyl/poppers in the male gay community sooner or later you will be offered a sniff of them. It’s often a shared experience so that both of you will enjoy the heightened pleasures. But as often as not, only one partner uses them, so there is no obligation for you to participate too. If you get high on regular sex without stimulants then there is no need to reach for the handy bedside bottle of aroma. The choice is yours – but be informed beforehand of both the pleasures and the dangers.

* Like all mind and body altering substances there are always risks involved depending on the particular individual and the product use. You should always consult trained medical professionals before attempted use.
